Learning by Toy Design
workshop at Marusthali Vidyalaya, near Bikaner – august 2015, conducted by Designer- Educators Sudarshan Khanna and Surabhi Khanna
An innovative school Marusthali Vidyalaya in Ghadsisar village, near Bikaner is based on community education and active participation of its students in the school management. The students have a promising performance; the efforts of its founders Vishwanathan Deepak and his wife Amita. The children in this school project a good deal of self-confidence.
We were invited to conduct a workshop for the students and teachers of the school. We titled this “Learning by Toy Design” . The age group of 30 students was between 10-13 years along with a group of teachers.
We introduce toys with simple techniques for children like pasting and cutting. But for this group we also introduced a toy with involved tying many knots. It was interesting to see that all children could tie good knots on their own. It occurred to us that it must be maybe because the children’s’ mothers stitch at home and the children themselves too mend their clothes. These skills are natural part of everyday’s lives of the children. In many urban homes, since mending things like clothes, etc. is not a part of everyday activity, many children are not used to simple skills.
We were pleased to conduct the workshop for children and teachers in this special environment.
